Do I Need New Strings When Getting My Guitar Setup?
Yes. Acoustic guitar setups and electric guitar setups are best performed on instruments with fresh strings (new strings are not included in the setup price). You can provide us with your own preferred strings or purchase strings at any of Mason Music’s studios to be put on your guitar during setup.
You’ll need to fill out this setup form before dropping off your guitar.
How Do I Know If My Guitar Needs To Be Set Up?
The need for a setup really depends on the kind of player you are. A working musician may need guitars set up monthly while a student may only need one every other year. For the casual player setups are generally needed:
• on new beginner instruments (and some high-end ones)
• if the instrument is dropped/falls over/is hit
• if string gauge/tuning is changed (long term)
• if it’s exposed to harsh environmental changes
A general rule of thumb is to have the setup checked twice per year.
Note for Beginners: A setup can make your first guitar more comfortable and sound better. Fighting the annoyances of high action and poor intonation is no fun for anyone! Not sure if your guitar needs to be setup? Don’t worry! We are always happy to evaluate an instrument and provide recommendations at no cost.
GUITAR MAINTENANCE SERVICES INCLUDE:
We’ll check for and reseat any loose frets, file them all level and reshape the crown of each. This process can make a dramatic difference as any frets that are slightly high, low or worn (which can cause annoying fret buzz and require higher action to compensate). This process takes between 2 and 4 hours and requires the strings and nut to be removed, so it’s best to be paired with a setup. This is something that only needs to be done a couple of times at most through the life of the frets.
Nut Adjustment
Nut adjustment is another common need on electric guitars. (This service is included on acoustic guitar/banjo setups.) Many players like to change the nut or saddle material and that requires the new pieces to be custom fit in most cases.
