Mason Music Student Spotlight: Avery Routman

If you haven’t met Avery Routman, then you haven’t discovered yet what a total rockstar she is! This kid has blown us away with her incredible passion for music and her thirst for knowledge. In just a year, she’s gone from a beginner musician to someone who eats, sleeps, and breathes music. Learning an instrument for the first time is like unlocking a whole new world. It’s a journey of self-discovery and a chance to feel the power of music in your bones. Avery totally gets that. She says music has had a profound effect on her, and being able to perform such beautiful pieces fills her with pride. It’s incredible how much she’s learned about herself and how music can move her soul.

When Avery first considered taking music lessons, she was instantly captivated by the piano’s enchanting sound and the idea of creating her own beautiful melodies. Avery’s personality is full of energy and spunk, so we knew pairing her with the right teacher would make her lessons something she would love instead of a chore she dreads. Lucky for her, Mason Music teacher Rachel Thomas was her perfect match, and she showed her the ropes while still letting her be her silly, fun-loving self. Afterall, music is about expressing yourself! According to Avery’s teacher, Rachel, “Avery is a vibrant and lively student who brings a lot of fun into the classroom. Avery’s interests include a deep love for Harry Potter, with a particular obsession for the character Luna Lovegood. Additionally, Avery loves cats.” We love when our teachers really get to the heart of who our students are, and involve their passions and interests in their music. It’s a huge component of why music lessons at Mason Music are so successful for our students. They get to chase their dreams and their passions while we help infuse music into every aspect of their world.

Rachel clearly knows her student well, because when we asked Avery what she loves, she told us that you can find her nose-deep in a hefty book, splashing around in the pool, or shooting hoops on the basketball court. Her love for good stories and epic adventures has unified her interests of reading and music, and she enjoys learning to play the theme music from movies and books she likes. She’s even mastered “Hedwig’s Theme” from the Harry Potter films because she’s just that cool. Theme music for a favorite show or movie is a great way to get a child excited about starting a new instrument!

At Mason Music, we are always interested in what makes students really LOVE their lessons. Avery’s dedication and willingness to try is something we hope all of our students grow into, so we had to ask her what her secret is. Here’s some solid advice from the maestro herself: “if you mess up during a performance, chances are no one will even notice”. That’s right, folks! Keep the show going, embrace your musical talent, and perform with unshakable confidence. If it works for a rockstar like Avery, then we can all give some courage on stage a chance!

We can’t wait to witness the incredible future that lies ahead for Avery. In just a year, she’s already accomplished so much, and we have a sneaking suspicion that this is only the beginning. So, keep on rockin’, Avery! The world is your stage, and we’re all cheering you on.
