Student Spotlight: Millie-Margaret Coston

At Mason Music, we love celebrating our students! This month, we’re thrilled to shine the spotlight on Millie-Margaret Coston, a young musician who has been part of the Mason Music community for five years.

Millie-Margaret’s journey with Mason Music began when her big brother wanted to learn guitar. Inspired by him, she decided she wanted to play guitar, too, but discovered her hands were too small for guitar at only 5 years old and pivoted to the ukulele to start (a great choice for future guitarists!). Since then, she has flourished as a musician, learning and playing songs that bring her joy, and has since picked up the guitar, too, in hopes of joining our Rock Band League program.

A huge part of Millie-Margaret’s musical success is thanks to her incredible teacher, Eytan Freedman. She shares, “Eytan is one of the kindest, most patient, and encouraging people I know. His positive attitude makes every lesson a joy.” She loves that he takes time to explain things in a way that’s easy to understand and always supports her song choices. “I am pretty sure he just started teaching ukulele because of me,” she says. “He is so dedicated to his students, and I am so lucky to have him as a teacher.”

Millie-Margaret is drawn to gospel, pop, and Christian music. Right now, she’s learning Good Day by Forrest Franks and she says she enjoys playing happy, upbeat songs. Some of her favorites include I Ain’t Worried by One Republic, Dynamite by Taio Cruz, Can’t Stop the Feeling by Justin Timberlake, Happy by Pharrell, and Meet Me in the Middle by Maren Morris.

Music has had a profound impact on Millie-Margaret’s life. “It makes me feel happy! It cheers me up on hard days,” she shares. Her musical journey began at just five years old when she learned to play Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star on the ukulele and her love for music has only grown since then.

In addition to being a talented musician, Millie-Margaret has many other passions! She is a gymnast, enjoys arts and crafts, and is an active member of the GEMS (Girls Engaged in Math and Science) team at her school. Her love for learning and creativity shines in all areas of her life.

For fellow musicians, Millie-Margaret offers this advice: “Never give up! If something is hard, always keep trying! Tell yourself you can do it!” Her perseverance and positivity are an inspiration to us.

One of Millie-Margaret’s favorite parts of being a Mason Music student is participating in recitals. “I really enjoy the recitals and want to encourage you to participate in the recitals every fall and spring,” she says. “They will help you grow as a musician. Even if you are new, your teacher can help you learn a song in time for the recital.”

We are so proud of Millie-Margaret and can’t wait to see where life takes her next. Keep up the amazing work!
