Student Spotlight: Cynthia and George Butler

At Mason Music, we love celebrating our students! This month, we’re shining the spotlight on the Butlers, a fabulous retired couple who prove that it’s never too late to follow your musical dreams – with the help of adult music lessons.

Cynthia joined Mason Music almost two years ago, excited to finally learn piano. A few months later, George decided to return to playing piano himself—and to challenge himself with new pieces. What started as two individual journeys has become something they enjoy side-by-side, filling their home with music and their days with creativity and challenge.

A big part of their progress comes from their teachers. Cynthia studies piano with John Will Martin, who she calls “an ultra-talented professional with infinite patience and confidence in his student.” George works with Pam Winstead, who he describes as “very supportive” and gifted in teaching the emotional expression behind the music.

The Butlers are drawn to rich, expressive genres. Cynthia loves classical music—recent favorites include The Swan and Danse Macabre by Camille Saint-Saëns. George enjoys both classical and jazz, recently learning Desafinado by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Meditation by Jules Massenet, and Clair de Lune by Claude Debussy.

For Cynthia, music has opened up a whole new world of creativity and joy. George adds that it challenges his mind and keeps him sharp. “[Music] stimulates my mind and concentration,” he shares.

Outside of music, they both enjoy gardening and staying active. Cynthia is also a retired ballet dancer and a fan of PBS Masterpiece. George prioritizes physical fitness and staying engaged in daily life.

Their advice to other music students? “You must enjoy practicing—it’s the only way to advance.” And their hard work is paying off. “I’m playing songs I only dreamed about previously,” Cynthia says. “All thanks to a strict and determined professor!”

We’re so proud of Cynthia and George and all they’ve accomplished—and we’re inspired by the joy and dedication they bring to their lessons each week. Keep playing, Butlers!
