We’re excited to shine the spotlight on our amazing student Oliver Soong! A talented bassist and dedicated student at Mason Music for the past three years, Oliver has shown us how to balance passion, hard work, and a love of music.
Oliver first came to Mason Music because of his interest in playing rock music with some encouragement from his uncle, who is a multi-instrumentalist himself. Oliver decided to pick up bass and the rest is history! Now, Oliver’s expanding his musical horizons, incorporating jazz into his repertoire, too.
One of the things that stands out about Oliver is his ability to connect music with his personal growth. He shared that music has helped him become more confident and express himself better, as well as meet friends he wouldn’t have otherwise. “I’ve done two seasons of Rock Band League and enjoy playing to an audience. I really enjoy performing with my friends,” Oliver says. Outside of bass, Oliver also plays clarinet in his middle school band. Woah!
When asked what advice he would give to other students, Oliver said: “Practice. Being consistent with practicing at the start really makes you get good enough to enjoy playing music faster. You have to be patient to start with because learning an instrument is tough. By practicing and getting to a point when you actually are playing songs, it becomes really fun to play music.” Oliver’s advice reflects his own experience—he’s put in the work and it’s paying off!\
A fun Mason Music memory Oliver shared with us happened during one of his Rock Band League performances last year, which coincidentally took place on St. Patrick’s Day. His band surprised the crowd by rocking out while decked out in leprechaun hats and fake mustaches!
Though music is a huge part of Oliver’s life, he’s also involved in several other activities. He loves building LEGOs, is a member of his school’s robotics team, and enjoys running track. With such a full schedule, it’s clear that Oliver is passionate and balances his interests with skill!
